In the early the 1920s, our grandparents ran butcher’s stalls at La Boquería and El Ninot markets in Barcelona.
We stopped processing our livestock at the old abattoir in the centre of Barcelona and began a new era at the city’s modern wholesale food market: Mercabarna.
Another new era was beginning. We moved into the 21st century by building a modern cutting room. Carns Salas and Carnes Tonijuan merged to create the Companyia General Càrnia, seeking to provide a full range of services to supermarkets and major distribution chains.
We acquired the Carns Puigbò company, which provided an exclusive service to hotels and restaurants in the province of Barcelona. This expanded our distribution and supply network throughout Catalonia.
After acquiring new facilities in Montcada i Reixach, we expanded our operations and began managing meat supplies for major distribution companies.
At Càrnia, we are committed to health, sustainability and the environment. We started working with the Pirinat project, a group of young organic livestock producers in the county of Ripollès.
We invited a new partner to join the company: Carns Catalana Pallejà. This Mercabarna-based meat company was founded in 1987 by a group of Catalan livestock farmers seeking to rear their own livestock and supply supermarkets and butchers directly, without middlemen, controlling the entire distribution chain.
We acquired a 21,000 m2 plot at Mercabarna to build new facilities through a public tender. By unifying our production centres we have streamlined the services we provide our clients, who now include butchers, supermarkets, institutions, bars, restaurants, and major national and international distributors.
